Markerless Comparison with a Quantity Difference in Chinese

无标记数量差比较 wú biāojì shùliàng chā bǐjiào

With certain scalar adjectives such as 高, 大, 早, and 晚, Mandarin can state the exact difference between A and B without 比: A comes first, the adjective follows, B is the standard, and a quantity complement closes the sentence. This concise pattern is restricted to clear measurable scales.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

A + Adjective + B + Quantity Complement

Read the structure

With certain scalar adjectives such as 高, 大, 早, and 晚, Mandarin can state the exact difference between A and B without 比: A comes first, the adjective follows, B is the standard, and a quantity complement closes the sentence. This concise pattern is restricted to clear measurable scales. Keep the model A + Adjective + B + Quantity Complement visible while you compare each sentence.

她高我五厘米。

She is five centimeters taller than me.

Choose the right context

State a height difference: 她高我五厘米。 State an age difference: 姐姐大我十岁。 State an arrival-time difference: 他早我十分钟。

姐姐大我十岁。

My older sister is ten years older than me.

Respect the boundary

Do not place the quantity before the comparison standard B. Do not add 很 before the scalar adjective in this exact-difference pattern. Do not use the markerless form for a vague subjective quality with no measurable scale.

她高五厘米我。

(She is taller five centimeters me.)

Repair the pattern

The quantity complement is placed before the comparison standard: The standard B comes immediately after the scalar adjective, and the amount of difference follows it as the quantity complement. A degree adverb conflicts with an exact difference: The exact quantity 十岁 supplies the degree of difference. 很 cannot be inserted before 大 in this comparison structure.

她高我五厘米。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

She is five centimeters taller than me.

姐姐大我十岁。

Jiějie dà wǒ shí suì.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

  • State a height difference: 她高我五厘米。
  • State an age difference: 姐姐大我十岁。
  • State an arrival-time difference: 他早我十分钟。

Do not use it when

  • Do not place the quantity before the comparison standard B.
  • Do not add 很 before the scalar adjective in this exact-difference pattern.
  • Do not use the markerless form for a vague subjective quality with no measurable scale.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

她高五厘米我。

她高我五厘米。

The quantity complement is placed before the comparison standard

The standard B comes immediately after the scalar adjective, and the amount of difference follows it as the quantity complement.

姐姐很大我十岁。

姐姐大我十岁。

A degree adverb conflicts with an exact difference

The exact quantity 十岁 supplies the degree of difference. 很 cannot be inserted before 大 in this comparison structure.

她高五厘米我。

Tā gāo wǔ límǐ wǒ.

The standard B comes immediately after the scalar adjective, and the amount of difference follows it as the quantity complement.

姐姐很大我十岁。

Jiějie hěn dà wǒ shí suì.

The exact quantity 十岁 supplies the degree of difference. 很 cannot be inserted before 大 in this comparison structure.

Markerless Comparison with a Quantity Difference Questions

Why is there no 比 in this comparison?

Can I use this with any adjective?

No. It is restricted to adjectives with a clear scale, especially height, age, timing, length, and similar measurable dimensions.
