Verb or Adjective Phrases as Subjects in Chinese

动词性或形容词性短语作主语 dòngcíxìng huò xíngróngcíxìng duǎnyǔ zuò zhǔyǔ

A verb or adjective phrase can occupy the subject position when an action, activity, or property is being discussed as a topic-like entity. The following predicate evaluates or comments on that whole phrase. This does not turn every verb into a noun; the construction depends on a coherent general activity or property that the comment can describe.

MODEL

Verb or Adjective Phrase + Comment

Read the structure

A verb or adjective phrase can occupy the subject position when an action, activity, or property is being discussed as a topic-like entity. The following predicate evaluates or comments on that whole phrase. This does not turn every verb into a noun; the construction depends on a coherent general activity or property that the comment can describe. Keep the model Verb or Adjective Phrase + Comment visible while you compare each sentence.

每天走路对身体有好处。

Walking every day is good for the body.

Choose the right context

Evaluate an activity as useful, difficult, or enjoyable. Discuss a property as a general condition. Place a whole predicate phrase before a comment about it.

早点儿出发比较合适。

Leaving a little earlier is more suitable.

Respect the boundary

Do not split the subject phrase with material from the following predicate. Do not reverse the subject phrase and its comment. Do not assume every event clause can stand as a subject without context.

有好处对身体每天走路。

(Is beneficial to the body walking every day.)

Repair the pattern

The comment is placed before the subject phrase: The activity phrase 每天走路 is the subject and therefore precedes the comment 对身体有好处. The copula is stranded inside the comment: The degree adverb 比较 directly modifies the adjective 合适; 是 cannot intervene in this adjective predicate.

每天走路对身体有好处。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS

Verb or Adjective Phrases as Subjects Questions

Does the subject phrase become a noun?

It fills a nominal sentence position, but its internal predicate structure remains visible.

Can a full clause serve as the subject?

Mandarin permits larger subject units too, but this lesson focuses on compact verb and adjective phrases listed at HSK 3.
