Nominal Subjects in Chinese

名词性主语 míng cí xìng zhǔ yǔ

A Mandarin subject may be a pronoun, a name, or a fuller noun phrase. It normally appears before the predicate and identifies what the sentence is about. The subject phrase must remain internally complete: demonstratives, numbers, classifiers, and modifiers stay with its head noun rather than moving into the predicate.

MODEL

Noun Phrase + Predicate

Read the structure

A Mandarin subject may be a pronoun, a name, or a fuller noun phrase. It normally appears before the predicate and identifies what the sentence is about. The subject phrase must remain internally complete: demonstratives, numbers, classifiers, and modifiers stay with its head noun rather than moving into the predicate. Keep the model Noun Phrase + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

我姐姐是老师。

My older sister is a teacher.

Choose the right context

Use a person or thing noun phrase before a predicate as its subject. Use a pronoun as a compact subject when its referent is known. Use a complete quantified noun phrase as the subject of a shared statement.

这个孩子很高兴。

This child is happy.

Respect the boundary

Do not place an ordinary subject after its predicate in a neutral statement. Do not separate the subject's classifier from its head noun. Do not add 是 merely because the subject is followed by an adjective.

这个孩子了很高兴。

(This child is happy.)

Repair the pattern

Aspect particle inserted between subject and predicate: Perfective 了 cannot attach to the subject noun phrase 这个孩子 or occupy the slot before its adjectival predicate 很高兴. Classifier detached from the subject noun: 三本书 is one complete subject phrase; 都 follows that phrase and cannot split classifier from noun.

这个孩子很高兴。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Use a person or thing noun phrase before a predicate as its subject.
  • Use a pronoun as a compact subject when its referent is known.
  • Use a complete quantified noun phrase as the subject of a shared statement.

Do not use it when

  • Do not place an ordinary subject after its predicate in a neutral statement.
  • Do not separate the subject's classifier from its head noun.
  • Do not add 是 merely because the subject is followed by an adjective.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

这个孩子了很高兴。

这个孩子很高兴。

Aspect particle inserted between subject and predicate

Perfective 了 cannot attach to the subject noun phrase 这个孩子 or occupy the slot before its adjectival predicate 很高兴.

三本都书很新。

三本书都很新。

Classifier detached from the subject noun

三本书 is one complete subject phrase; 都 follows that phrase and cannot split classifier from noun.

这个孩子了很高兴。

zhè ge hái zi le hěn gāo xìng 。

Perfective 了 cannot attach to the subject noun phrase 这个孩子 or occupy the slot before its adjectival predicate 很高兴.

三本都书很新。

sān běn dōu shū hěn xīn 。

三本书 is one complete subject phrase; 都 follows that phrase and cannot split classifier from noun.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 名词性主语 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 三本都书很新。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 名词性主语.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 名词性主语. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Nominal Subjects Questions

Can a sentence omit its subject?

Yes when context supplies it, but an expressed subject normally comes before the predicate.

Can a time phrase come before the subject?

Yes. A clause-level time frame may precede the subject without becoming the grammatical subject.
