Nominal Phrases and Their Sentence Roles in Chinese

名词性短语 míngcíxìng duǎnyǔ

A nominal phrase behaves as a noun-sized unit even when it contains several words. It commonly serves as a subject, object, or topic and may name people, things, places, times, or quantities. This functional label concerns how the whole phrase works in a sentence, whereas labels such as modifier-head describe its internal structure.

Read the structure

A nominal phrase behaves as a noun-sized unit even when it contains several words. It commonly serves as a subject, object, or topic and may name people, things, places, times, or quantities. This functional label concerns how the whole phrase works in a sentence, whereas labels such as modifier-head describe its internal structure. Choose the right context

Use a multiword unit as the subject of a sentence. Place a complete referring phrase after a transitive verb. Treat a quantity or descriptive noun group as one constituent.

我认识那位老师。

I know that teacher.

Respect the boundary

Do not separate a numeral from its classifier and noun. Do not reverse a demonstrative and the noun phrase it introduces. Do not confuse sentence function with internal phrase structure.

我买了新一本书。

(I bought new one book.)

Repair the pattern

The classifier phrase is scrambled: The numeral-classifier unit 一本 precedes the modifier-head unit 新书 inside the nominal phrase. The demonstrative phrase is reversed: The demonstrative and classifier 这本 introduce the head noun 书 rather than following it.

我买了一本新书。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

  • Do not reverse a demonstrative and the noun phrase it introduces.
  • Do not confuse sentence function with internal phrase structure.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

The numeral-classifier unit 一本 precedes the modifier-head unit 新书 inside the nominal phrase.

我喜欢书这本。

08 / QUESTIONS

Nominal Phrases and Their Sentence Roles Questions

Is every nominal phrase a single noun?

No. A pronoun, quantity phrase, or larger noun group can function nominally as one constituent.

Is nominal a structure label?

It is primarily a functional class. The same phrase can also receive an internal structural label such as modifier-head or coordinate.
