Appositive Phrases in Chinese

同位短语 tóngwèi duǎnyǔ

An appositive phrase places two nominal expressions side by side when both identify the same person, thing, or category. In 我的朋友小张, both parts refer to one person. The parts are syntactically equal, so this pattern differs from possession, ordinary description with 的, and serial participants in a clause.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Noun Phrase 1 + Noun Phrase 2 (same referent)

Read the structure

An appositive phrase places two nominal expressions side by side when both identify the same person, thing, or category. In 我的朋友小张, both parts refer to one person. The parts are syntactically equal, so this pattern differs from possession, ordinary description with 的, and serial participants in a clause. Keep the model Noun Phrase 1 + Noun Phrase 2 (same referent) visible while you compare each sentence.

我的朋友小张今天来了。

My friend Xiao Zhang came today.

Choose the right context

Add a name after a role or relationship term. Clarify a general category with a specific label. Treat both adjacent noun phrases as references to one entity.

他妈妈李老师教我们汉语。

His mother, Teacher Li, teaches us Chinese.

Respect the boundary

Do not reverse the internal order of a person's name. Do not insert a predicate between the two identifying expressions. Do not use apposition when the two noun phrases refer to different participants.

我的朋友张小今天来了。

(My friend Zhang Xiao came today.)

Repair the pattern

The personal name is reversed: The familiar-name form is 小 plus surname, so the identifying appositive must remain 小张. The title and surname are reversed: A Chinese surname precedes the title 老师; reversing that order breaks the name-title unit.

我的朋友小张今天来了。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

  • Clarify a general category with a specific label.
  • Treat both adjacent noun phrases as references to one entity.

Do not use it when

  • Do not reverse the internal order of a person's name.
  • Do not insert a predicate between the two identifying expressions.
  • Do not use apposition when the two noun phrases refer to different participants.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

我的朋友张小今天来了。

我的朋友小张今天来了。

The personal name is reversed

The familiar-name form is 小 plus surname, so the identifying appositive must remain 小张.

他妈妈老师李教我们汉语。

他妈妈李老师教我们汉语。

The title and surname are reversed

A Chinese surname precedes the title 老师; reversing that order breaks the name-title unit.

我的朋友张小今天来了。

Wǒ de péngyou Zhāng Xiǎo jīntiān lái le.

The familiar-name form is 小 plus surname, so the identifying appositive must remain 小张.

他妈妈老师李教我们汉语。

Tā māma lǎoshī Lǐ jiāo wǒmen Hànyǔ.

A Chinese surname precedes the title 老师; reversing that order breaks the name-title unit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Appositive Phrases Questions

Do appositive phrases need 的?

Not between the two equal references. Adding 的 usually changes the relation into modification or possession.

Is the second part always a personal name?

No. It may be a name, title, category label, or another noun phrase referring to the same entity.
