Five Basic Structural Phrase Types in Chinese
基本结构类型短语
Mandarin phrases can be classified by the grammatical relation between their parts. At this level, learners distinguish coordinate, modifier-head, verb-object, verb-complement, and subject-predicate phrases. The label describes internal structure, not where the entire phrase appears in a sentence, and the same word may enter different structures in different contexts.

Read the structure
Mandarin phrases can be classified by the grammatical relation between their parts. At this level, learners distinguish coordinate, modifier-head, verb-object, verb-complement, and subject-predicate phrases. The label describes internal structure, not where the entire phrase appears in a sentence, and the same word may enter different structures in different contexts. Keep the model Coordinate / Modifier-Head / Verb-Object / Verb-Complement / Subject-Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
我和他都学习中文。
He and I both study Chinese.
Choose the right context
Identify how two phrase parts relate to each other. Build a larger sentence from a correctly ordered phrase. Distinguish a head from its modifier, object, or complement.
她买了一件新衣服。
She bought a new item of clothing.
Respect the boundary
Do not classify a phrase only by its first word. Do not treat every adjacent pair as a coordinate phrase. Do not reverse a verb and the object or complement it governs.
我把水果吃。
(I ba fruit eat.)
Repair the pattern
把 is followed by an unsupported bare verb: The ordinary verb-object phrase 吃水果 is complete without 把; adding 把 requires a bounded predicate after 吃. A degree adverb is stranded after its adjective: The final 很 has no following predicate to modify and cannot trail the complete phrase 特别开心.
我吃水果。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
02 / MAP
Read the Sentence
Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.
我和他都学习中文。
He and I both study Chinese.

03 / EXAMPLES
Examples You Can Reuse
Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.
我和他都学习中文。
He and I both study Chinese.
她买了一件新衣服。
She bought a new item of clothing.
我已经听清楚了。
I have heard it clearly.
04 / LIMITS
When to Use It — and When Not To
Use it when
- Identify how two phrase parts relate to each other.
- Build a larger sentence from a correctly ordered phrase.
- Distinguish a head from its modifier, object, or complement.
Do not use it when
- Do not classify a phrase only by its first word.
- Do not treat every adjacent pair as a coordinate phrase.
- Do not reverse a verb and the object or complement it governs.
05 / REPAIR
Compare Right and Wrong
Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.
我把水果吃。
我吃水果。
把 is followed by an unsupported bare verb
The ordinary verb-object phrase 吃水果 is complete without 把; adding 把 requires a bounded predicate after 吃.
她特别开心很。
她特别开心。
A degree adverb is stranded after its adjective
The final 很 has no following predicate to modify and cannot trail the complete phrase 特别开心.

她特别开心很。

06 / PRACTICE
Practice the Grammar Point
Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.
1. Judge the sentence
2. Choose the correction
3. Build the sentence
Build a complete sentence with 基本结构类型短语.
07 / APPLY
Apply It in Your Sentence
Write one original sentence with 基本结构类型短语. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.
08 / QUESTIONS
Five Basic Structural Phrase Types Questions
Can one phrase contain another phrase?
Yes. A larger phrase can contain smaller phrases, so classification depends on the relation at the level being analyzed.
Is a subject-predicate phrase always a full sentence?
No. It can function as a phrase inside a larger construction when it lacks independent sentence intonation.
