连A带B: Two Actions Together in Chinese

连A带B lián A dài B

连A带B combines two simultaneous or closely bundled actions into one vivid description, often after an emotion or event triggers both. 连 introduces the first action and 带 the second. The two slots should be structurally parallel and naturally co-occur; this pattern does not mean even and does not take 都 or 也.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 连 + Verb A + 带 + Verb B

Read the structure

连A带B combines two simultaneous or closely bundled actions into one vivid description, often after an emotion or event triggers both. 连 introduces the first action and 带 the second. The two slots should be structurally parallel and naturally co-occur; this pattern does not mean even and does not take 都 or 也. Keep the model Subject + 连 + Verb A + 带 + Verb B visible while you compare each sentence.

几个孩子吓得连哭带叫。

The children were so frightened that they cried and screamed.

Choose the right context

Bundle crying and shouting into one frightened reaction. Describe jumping and bouncing as one excited response. Present two naturally co-occurring actions in vivid narration.

收到录取通知,她高兴得连蹦带跳。

She jumped for joy after receiving the admission notice.

Respect the boundary

Do not add 都 or 也 as though 连 meant even. Do not reverse 连 and 带. Do not combine actions that have different subjects or no coherent shared event.

孩子吓得连哭都带叫。

(The child was so frightened that even cried all with shouted.)

Repair the pattern

连 is misread as even and paired with 都: In 连A带B, 连 and 带 are the two fixed coordinators; 都 does not belong inside the pattern. The two framing markers are reversed: The fixed order is 连 + A + 带 + B.

孩子吓得连哭带叫。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
