Read the structure
互相 marks a reciprocal relationship: two or more participants perform the same kind of action toward one another. It appears before the verb phrase and normally requires a plural or contextually collective participant. It cannot take aspect marking itself or be placed after the verb as though it were an object. Keep the model Plural subject + 互相 + Verb phrase visible while you compare each sentence.
同学们应该互相帮助。
Classmates should help one another.
Choose the right context
Describe two people helping each other. Describe reciprocal understanding, care, or communication. Use it when each participant acts toward another participant in the group.
我们需要互相了解。
We need to understand each other.
Respect the boundary
Do not use it with a genuinely singular participant. Do not attach 了 to 互相. Do not place 互相 after the verb as its object.
我们帮助互相。
(We help each other-marker.)
Repair the pattern
The reciprocal follows the verb: 互相 is an adverbial and must precede the verb 帮助. 了 is attached to the reciprocal adverb: 互相 is an adverb and cannot take the aspect particle 了 before 问好.
我们互相帮助。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
