或者……，或者……
或者…或者… lays out two or more alternatives in a statement, instruction, or open choice. Repeating 或者 clearly marks each parallel option. In a direct alternative question, Mandarin normally uses 还是 instead. The alternatives should be structurally parallel, and each 或者 must come before the option it introduces.

Read the structure
或者…或者… lays out two or more alternatives in a statement, instruction, or open choice. Repeating 或者 clearly marks each parallel option. In a direct alternative question, Mandarin normally uses 还是 instead. The alternatives should be structurally parallel, and each 或者 must come before the option it introduces. Keep the model 或者 + Alternative A, 或者 + Alternative B visible while you compare each sentence.
这件事或者暂停，或者重新开始。
This matter will either pause or start over.
Choose the right context
List possible actions in a statement. Offer multiple acceptable choices without asking a direct question. Repeat 或者 before parallel clauses for clarity.
暑假或者去上海，或者去杭州。
During summer vacation, we will go either to Shanghai or Hangzhou.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 或者 in a direct either-or question. Do not place 或者 after the option it introduces. Do not coordinate fragments with mismatched grammatical roles.
你去或者上海杭州？
(Are you going or Shanghai Hangzhou?)
Repair the pattern
或者 splits the verb from its destination: In a direct alternative question, keep each destination intact and connect them with 还是. The connector follows its option: Each 或者 must precede the parallel option that it introduces.
你去上海还是杭州？
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
