Ordering Multiple Noun Modifiers in Chinese

多项定语 duōxiàng dìngyǔ

When several expressions modify one Mandarin noun, they form a single pre-nominal sequence. Possessors and larger identifying phrases normally come before demonstrative-number-classifier material, while descriptive phrases stay nearest the head noun. Each modifier that requires 的 must keep it; the head noun cannot be moved into the middle of the sequence.

Read the structure

When several expressions modify one Mandarin noun, they form a single pre-nominal sequence. Possessors and larger identifying phrases normally come before demonstrative-number-classifier material, while descriptive phrases stay nearest the head noun. Each modifier that requires 的 must keep it; the head noun cannot be moved into the middle of the sequence. Keep the model Possessor + Demonstrative/Quantity + Descriptive modifier + Noun visible while you compare each sentence.

这是我的那两本新词典。

These are those two new dictionaries of mine.

Choose the right context

Build a noun phrase with ownership, quantity, and description. Keep relative-clause information before the noun it modifies. Order classifiers before descriptive material and the head noun.

我认识那个穿红衣服的学生。

I know the student wearing red clothes.

Respect the boundary

Do not place descriptive modifiers after the head noun. Do not put the head noun between two modifiers. Do not drop a required 的 after a phrasal modifier.

我认识那个穿的红衣服学生。

(I know that wear-de red-clothes student.)

Repair the pattern

的 splits the verb from its object inside the modifier: Complete 穿红衣服 first, then use 的 to close the whole modifier before 学生. The classifier phrase follows the head noun: Demonstrative-number-classifier material belongs before the descriptive modifier and head noun.

我认识那个穿红衣服的学生。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
