Elapsed Time since a Completed Event in Chinese
动作结束后的时距:动词+时量+了
This pattern measures the interval from a completed transition or event up to the current reference point. A duration follows the event predicate and sentence-final 了 presents the resulting elapsed state as currently relevant. It differs from measuring how long an ongoing activity itself lasted or continues.

MODEL
Event Predicate + Duration + 了
Read the structure
This pattern measures the interval from a completed transition or event up to the current reference point. A duration follows the event predicate and sentence-final 了 presents the resulting elapsed state as currently relevant. It differs from measuring how long an ongoing activity itself lasted or continues. Keep the model Event Predicate + Duration + 了 visible while you compare each sentence.
他们来中国两个月了。
They have been in China for two months.
Choose the right context
State how long ago someone arrived, left, married, or entered a state. Place the elapsed duration after the event predicate. Use sentence-final 了 to present the current elapsed situation.
哥哥去北京一个星期了。
My older brother has been in Beijing for a week.
Respect the boundary
Do not split the numeral from its time unit. Do not move the destination before its motion verb. Do not confuse elapsed time since an event with the event's own duration.
我父母结婚二十了年。
(My parents married twenty le years.)
Repair the pattern
The numeral and time unit are split: 二十年 is one duration phrase; sentence-final 了 follows the complete phrase rather than splitting it. The motion verb and destination are reversed: In this pattern 去 precedes its destination 北京 before the elapsed duration.
我父母结婚二十年了。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

- Use sentence-final 了 to present the current elapsed situation.
Do not use it when
- Do not split the numeral from its time unit.
- Do not move the destination before its motion verb.
- Do not confuse elapsed time since an event with the event's own duration.

08 / QUESTIONS
Elapsed Time since a Completed Event Questions
Does 两个月 describe how long 来 lasted?
No. 来 is a transition; 两个月 measures the interval since arrival and the resulting stay up to now.
Why is 了 at the end?
Sentence-final 了 presents the elapsed situation as a current state. It is not merely a past-tense marker.
