…了…(就)… Condensed Sequence in Chinese
……了……(就)……
This condensed pattern presents an event or newly established situation with 了 and follows it with an immediate, regular, or contextually expected consequence, often introduced by 就. In 他喝了酒就会脸红, the first clause functions like a recurring trigger; in 他下了课就去图书馆, it orders two events. Context determines whether the relation is temporal or conditional-habitual.

MODEL
Event/State + 了,Subject + (就) + Consequence
Read the structure
This condensed pattern presents an event or newly established situation with 了 and follows it with an immediate, regular, or contextually expected consequence, often introduced by 就. In 他喝了酒就会脸红, the first clause functions like a recurring trigger; in 他下了课就去图书馆, it orders two events. Context determines whether the relation is temporal or conditional-habitual. Keep the model Event/State + 了,Subject + (就) + Consequence visible while you compare each sentence.
他下了课就去图书馆。
He goes to the library as soon as class ends.
Choose the right context
Present one completed event followed promptly by another action. Describe a recurring trigger and its usual consequence. Place 就 before the consequence predicate when marking the link explicitly.
他喝了酒就会脸红。
His face turns red whenever he drinks alcohol.
Respect the boundary
Do not assume every pair of clauses with 了 has a causal meaning. Do not move 就 inside the first event phrase. Do not claim 就 is obligatory when context already establishes the sequence.
他下就了课去图书馆。
(He finishes then class and goes to the library.)
Repair the pattern
就 splits the first event: 了 completes the first event phrase, while 就 introduces the following consequence. The consequence is incomplete: 会 needs a following predicate to state the recurring consequence.
他下了课就去图书馆。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

04 / LIMITS
When to Use It — and When Not To
Use it when
- Present one completed event followed promptly by another action.
- Describe a recurring trigger and its usual consequence.
- Place 就 before the consequence predicate when marking the link explicitly.
Do not use it when
- Do not assume every pair of clauses with 了 has a causal meaning.
- Do not move 就 inside the first event phrase.
- Do not claim 就 is obligatory when context already establishes the sequence.
05 / REPAIR
Compare Right and Wrong
Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.
他下就了课去图书馆。
他下了课就去图书馆。
就 splits the first event
了 completes the first event phrase, while 就 introduces the following consequence.
他喝了酒就会。
他喝了酒就会脸红。
The consequence is incomplete
会 needs a following predicate to state the recurring consequence.
他下就了课去图书馆。
了 completes the first event phrase, while 就 introduces the following consequence.
他喝了酒就会。
会 needs a following predicate to state the recurring consequence.
06 / PRACTICE
Practice the Grammar Point
Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.
1. Judge the sentence
2. Choose the correction
3. Build the sentence
Build a complete sentence with ……了……(就)…….
07 / APPLY
Apply It in Your Sentence
Write one original sentence with ……了……(就)……. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.
08 / QUESTIONS
…了…(就)… Condensed Sequence Questions
Does this always mean as soon as?
No. It can order two events, but it can also describe a recurring condition and consequence. The surrounding tense, subject, and modal verbs help identify the reading.
Is 就 required?
No. The official pattern marks 就 as optional. It commonly makes the close sequence or trigger-result link easier to recognize.
