曾经: At Some Time in the Past in Chinese
曾经
曾经 locates a situation at some time in the past without naming that time. It precedes the verb phrase and often combines with experiential 过, although 过 is not mandatory in every sentence. 曾经 cannot take 了 itself, and it should not be placed after the verb it temporally frames. A specific date can replace it.

Subject + 曾经 + Verb phrase (+ 过)
Read the structure
曾经 locates a situation at some time in the past without naming that time. It precedes the verb phrase and often combines with experiential 过, although 过 is not mandatory in every sentence. 曾经 cannot take 了 itself, and it should not be placed after the verb it temporally frames. A specific date can replace it. Keep the model Subject + 曾经 + Verb phrase (+ 过) visible while you compare each sentence.
我曾经学过一年中文。
I once studied Chinese for a year.
Choose the right context
Mention a past experience without a specific date. Combine with 过 to emphasize prior experience. Contrast a former state with the present.
她曾经住在上海。
She once lived in Shanghai.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 曾经 for a future event. Do not attach 了 directly to 曾经. Do not put 曾经 after the main verb.
我曾经了住在上海。
(I once-le lived in Shanghai.)
Repair the pattern
了 is attached to the temporal adverb: 曾经 is an adverb and cannot take the aspect particle 了. The past-time adverb follows the verb: 曾经 must precede the verb phrase whose past occurrence it frames.
我曾经住在上海。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

曾经: At Some Time in the Past Questions
Must 曾经 be used with 过?
No. 过 is common for experience, but 曾经 can also describe a former state without it.
Can 曾经 refer to yesterday?
It can refer to the past, but a precise event usually sounds clearer with its specific time expression.
