Read the structure
不免 is an adverb meaning that a reaction or outcome cannot be avoided, often in a particular situation and often for something already arising. It directly precedes the predicate. Unlike 难免, it does not serve as an adjective in 是…的 frames and does not normally take a negative predicate directly after it. Keep the model Subject + 不免 + verb/adjective phrase visible while you compare each sentence.
第一次上台,我不免有些紧张。
On my first time on stage, I was inevitably a little nervous.
Choose the right context
Present a reaction or consequence as hard to avoid in the situation. Place 不免 directly before the verbal or adjective predicate. Use it especially when discussing a concrete reaction that has arisen or is arising.
看到旧照片,他不免想起过去。
Seeing the old photo, he could not help recalling the past.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 不免 as the predicate of 这是…的. Do not place a negative marker directly after 不免 as if it behaved exactly like 难免. Do not confuse it with 未免, which commonly evaluates something as excessive or inappropriate.
第一次上台紧张是不免的。
(Nervousness on a first stage appearance is unavoidable.)
Repair the pattern
Using 不免 as an adjective after 是: 不免 is an adverb and must modify the predicate. The adjective-like 是…的 frame belongs to 难免, not 不免. Placing 不免 after the predicate: 不免 is an adverbial modifier and belongs before the reaction predicate 有些担心.
第一次上台不免有些紧张。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
