Read the structure

不禁 introduces an involuntary or hard-to-control reaction, often translated as cannot help but. It commonly foregrounds an emotional or mental response and stands before the reaction verb phrase. It overlaps strongly with 不由得 rather than forming a categorical contrast; this card emphasizes the literary reaction-adverb use listed at Level 6. Keep the model Subject + 不禁 + Verb phrase visible while you compare each sentence.

看到这张照片,我不禁想起了童年。

Seeing this photo, I could not help recalling my childhood.

Choose the right context

Describe an involuntary emotional or mental reaction. Show that a sight or event naturally triggered an action. Use before verbs such as 想起, 笑, or 流泪.

听完他的故事,大家不禁笑了起来。

After hearing his story, everyone could not help laughing.

Respect the boundary

Do not split 不禁. Do not attach 了 to 不禁. Do not use it for a deliberate planned action.

我不想起禁童年。

(I not recall restrain childhood.)

Repair the pattern

The fixed adverb is split: 不禁 is a fixed adverb and must remain together before 想起. 了 is attached to the adverb: Aspect belongs to the reaction 笑起来, not to the adverb 不禁.

我不禁想起童年。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

不禁: Unable to Help Reacting Questions

Does 不禁 mean forbidden?

No. As an adverb it means being unable to suppress a natural reaction.

How is 不禁 different from 不由得?

They often overlap. 不禁 is especially common with literary emotional or mental reactions; 不由得 can also foreground bodily or action responses beyond the subject's control, but the boundary is not absolute.
