MODEL

Subject + 特意 + Verb phrase

Read the structure

特意 says that someone deliberately performs an action for a particular purpose or person, often going beyond their normal routine. It precedes the intended action and does not take aspect marking itself. The context should contain a purposeful choice, not an accidental event or an ordinary repeated habit. Purpose is essential. Keep the model Subject + 特意 + Verb phrase visible while you compare each sentence.

他特意从外地赶来参加婚礼。

He made a special trip from out of town for the wedding.

Choose the right context

Emphasize a deliberate extra effort. Explain that an action was done for a specific occasion or person. Contrast intentional behavior with coincidence.

大卫特意穿了一双新皮鞋。

David deliberately wore a new pair of leather shoes.

Respect the boundary

Do not use it for accidental events. Do not place it after the action. Do not attach 了 to 特意.

我给你留了特意一个座位。

(I saved purposefully one seat for you.)

Repair the pattern

The purpose adverb follows the action: 特意 must precede the intentional action 给你留座位. 了 is attached to the adverb: 特意 is an adverb and cannot take the aspect particle 了.

我特意给你留了一个座位。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
