MODEL
与其 + Less Desirable A, 不如 + Preferred B
Read the structure
与其...不如... presents two alternatives and judges the second as the better course. 与其 introduces the less desirable option, while 不如 introduces the preferred alternative or recommendation. The form often guides a practical decision rather than stating simple facts. Subjects may appear outside or within the clauses when the intended comparison remains clear. Keep the model 与其 + Less Desirable A, 不如 + Preferred B visible while you compare each sentence.
Rather than keep arguing, we had better run a small experiment first.
Choose the right context
To reject one course and recommend another: 与其继续争论,我们不如先做一个小实验。 To evaluate the second option as more practical: 与其仓促决定,不如再听听大家的意见。 With 倒 before 不如 to strengthen a contextual recommendation: 与其现在出发,倒不如等雨停了再走。
Rather than decide hastily, it would be better to hear everyone's views again.
Respect the boundary
For a neutral question between alternatives; use 还是 or another ordinary choice form when no option is presented as better. Do not flag 与其... That established pattern foregrounds willingness or firm preference rather than an evaluation with 不如. When the two clauses are unrelated and do not form alternatives within the same decision or comparison.
(Rather than keep waiting, we had better run the experiment first.)
Repair the pattern
与其 and 不如 are stacked before the rejected option: 与其 introduces the less desirable option, while 不如 belongs with the preferred second option. The two markers cannot open the same alternative. 不如 is inserted between the preferred action and its object: 不如 introduces the whole preferred alternative 先做实验. It cannot split the verb 做 from its object 实验.
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
与其... Choose B Questions
What does 与其...不如... mean?
It compares two alternatives, presents the one after 与其 as less desirable, and recommends or evaluates the one after 不如 as better. The two choices should belong to the same practical decision or comparison.
How is 与其...
Both favor the second option. 不如 evaluates it as the better course, while 宁可 or 宁愿 foregrounds the chooser's willingness or firm preference; neither continuation makes the other universally wrong.
Can I say 倒不如 after 与其?
Yes. 倒不如 is an established variant that can make the recommendation sound more context-driven or corrective. The basic comparison still rejects the 与其 option and favors the second one.
