Prefer Option B in Chinese

与其...宁可/宁愿... presents two alternatives and explicitly rejects the first in favor of the second. The 与其 clause names the less acceptable option; 宁可 or 宁愿 introduces the speaker's chosen option, often one accepted despite a cost. Keep each marker with its own alternative, and make the comparison meaningful in the same decision context.

STRUCTURE

与其 + Rejected A, 宁可/宁愿 + Chosen B

When to use 与其…宁可/宁愿 — and when not

Use it when

  • To reject one course of action and choose another: 与其继续争论,我宁愿先做一个小实验。
  • When the chosen option has a cost but is still preferable: 与其隐瞒问题,我们宁可推迟发布。
  • With 宁愿 for personal willingness or 宁可 for a firm preference; both can introduce the selected alternative in this frame.

Don't use it when

  • For a neutral question between alternatives; use 还是 or another ordinary choice form when no preference is asserted.
  • Do not flag 与其...不如... as wrong. It is a separate established pattern that also rejects the first option and favors the second.
  • Do not treat 宁可...也不... as the same word order. That pattern puts the chosen option first and the rejected option after 也不.

Right vs. wrong

与其 and 宁愿 stacked before the rejected option

与其 introduces the option being rejected. 宁愿 belongs with the option selected in the second clause, so the two markers cannot open the same option.

Two choice markers stacked before the selected option

Use one matching continuation for the selected option. In this frame, 宁愿 directly introduces that choice; 不如宁愿 is not a valid combined marker.

Prefer Option B FAQ

What does 与其...

It compares two alternatives, rejects the one after 与其, and selects the one introduced by 宁可 or 宁愿. The second choice can still be costly; it only needs to be preferable in that context.

How is 与其...

Both favor the second alternative. 宁可 or 宁愿 foregrounds the chooser's willingness or firm preference, while 不如 evaluates the second option as the better course; the difference is emphasis, not a universal ban on either form.

How is this different from 宁可...

与其...宁可... names the rejected option first and the chosen option second. 也不... reverses that presentation: it states the chosen option first, then the option the speaker refuses after 也不.
