Degree with 更加 and 相当 in Chinese

更加/相当 gèng jiā / xiāng dāng

更加 raises a quality or action relative to an earlier state or comparison point, meaning even more or further. 相当 marks a notably high degree, similar to quite or fairly. Both precede the expression they modify, but only 更加 inherently signals an increase relative to a baseline.

See the Structure

MODEL

更加 + Gradable Predicate; 相当 + Adjective

Read the structure

更加 raises a quality or action relative to an earlier state or comparison point, meaning even more or further. 相当 marks a notably high degree, similar to quite or fairly. Both precede the expression they modify, but only 更加 inherently signals an increase relative to a baseline. Keep the model 更加 + Gradable Predicate; 相当 + Adjective visible while you compare each sentence.

今天比昨天更加冷。

Today is even colder than yesterday.

Choose the right context

Use 更加 before a gradable predicate when a baseline is understood. Use 更加 to describe further change after a condition or action. Use 相当 before an adjective to state a notably high degree.

这个问题相当重要。

This issue is quite important.

Respect the boundary

Do not place either degree adverb after its adjective. Do not use 相当 alone to mean becoming more than before. Do not combine 更加 with a nongradable identity noun as though it were an adjective.

这个问题重要相当。

(This issue is quite important.)

Repair the pattern

Degree adverb follows the full adjectival predicate: 相当 modifies the degree of 重要 and must precede that adjectival predicate rather than follow the completed predicate. Relative degree marker follows the full predicate: 更加 must precede the gradable predicate 像老师 whose relative degree it increases.

这个问题相当重要。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
