01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 爱 + Verb + 不 + Verb

Read the structure

爱A不A repeats the same verb around 不 to express dismissive indifference: whether someone does the action is their own choice and the speaker will not accommodate them. It is colloquial and often confrontational despite its compact fixed form. The repeated verbs must match, and 爱 is not expressing affection here. Keep the model Subject + 爱 + Verb + 不 + Verb visible while you compare each sentence.

这是我的意见,你爱听不听。

That is my opinion; listen or do not, as you please.

Choose the right context

Express that another person's choice will not change your position. Reject pressure with a dismissive whether-you-do-it-or-not stance. Describe an unresponsive or half-hearted attitude in a fixed expression.

他总是一副爱理不理的样子。

He always looks as if he cannot be bothered to respond.

Respect the boundary

Do not use different verbs in the two A slots. Do not interpret 爱 as love or like in this pattern. Do not use the confrontational pattern in polite requests or neutral formal writing.

你爱听不说。

(You may listen or not speak.)

Repair the pattern

Different verbs fill the two A positions: The fixed pattern requires the same verb in both A slots: 听…听. The second repeated verb is omitted: 不 must be followed by the repeated verb to complete 爱A不A.

你爱听不听。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
