Agent and Patient Semantic Objects in Chinese

施事宾语和受事宾语 shīshì bīnyǔ hé shòushì bīnyǔ

Mandarin objects can be classified by their semantic relation to the verb. A patient object is affected or selected by the action, as in 对待考试. In existential and presentational clauses, a postverbal noun may instead be the agent of appearing, standing, or sitting. Grammatical position therefore does not determine semantic role by itself.

See the Structure

MODEL

Verb + Agent Object; Transitive Verb + Patient Object

Read the structure

Mandarin objects can be classified by their semantic relation to the verb. A patient object is affected or selected by the action, as in 对待考试. In existential and presentational clauses, a postverbal noun may instead be the agent of appearing, standing, or sitting. Grammatical position therefore does not determine semantic role by itself. Keep the model Verb + Agent Object; Transitive Verb + Patient Object visible while you compare each sentence.

家里来了一位客人。

A guest arrived at the house.

Choose the right context

Recognize an affected entity as a patient object. Recognize a postverbal participant as the agent of an existential event. Separate grammatical object position from semantic agent or patient role.

门口站着一个人。

A person is standing at the doorway.

Respect the boundary

Do not label every postverbal noun a patient. Do not move a patient before its selecting verb in unmarked order. Do not treat semantic role and sentence position as identical categories.

家里一位来客人了。

(At home one classifier came guest.)

Repair the pattern

The existential verb phrase is scrambled: The presentational predicate 来了 precedes the complete postverbal noun phrase 一位客人. The patient precedes the verb in unmarked order: The modal and transitive predicate precede the patient object in the unmarked sentence.

家里来了一位客人。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Jiālǐ lái le yí wèi kèrén.

A guest arrived at the house.

门口站着一个人。

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Recognize an affected entity as a patient object.
  • Recognize a postverbal participant as the agent of an existential event.
  • Separate grammatical object position from semantic agent or patient role.

Do not use it when

  • Do not label every postverbal noun a patient.
  • Do not move a patient before its selecting verb in unmarked order.
  • Do not treat semantic role and sentence position as identical categories.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

家里一位来客人了。

The presentational predicate 来了 precedes the complete postverbal noun phrase 一位客人.

你们这个考试认真对待要。

家里一位来客人了。

Jiālǐ yí wèi lái kèrén le.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 施事宾语和受事宾语 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 你们这个考试认真对待要。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 施事宾语和受事宾语.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 施事宾语和受事宾语. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Agent and Patient Semantic Objects Questions

Can an object be an agent?

Yes. In presentational clauses such as 家里来了一位客人, the postverbal noun occupies object position but denotes the arriving agent.

Is a patient always a physical object?

No. An event, question, or examination can be the entity targeted or affected by a verb.
