自从
自从 introduces the past starting point of a situation that continues or remains relevant afterward. It is followed by a time or event, while the main clause states the subsequent result, often with 就 or 便. The preposition cannot take 了, and the main result clause cannot be left incomplete.

Read the structure
自从 introduces the past starting point of a situation that continues or remains relevant afterward. It is followed by a time or event, while the main clause states the subsequent result, often with 就 or 便. The preposition cannot take 了, and the main result clause cannot be left incomplete. Keep the model 自从 + Past time or event (+ 以后), Subject + 就 / 便 + continuing result visible while you compare each sentence.
自从修了公路，这儿的交通就方便多了。
Ever since the road was built, transportation here has become much easier.
Choose the right context
Mark when an ongoing situation began. Use a past event as the starting point. Connect the starting point to a continuing result with 就 or 便.
自从来到中国，他就喜欢上了中国菜。
Ever since coming to China, he has grown to like Chinese food.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 自从 for an ending point. Do not attach 了 directly to 自从. Do not omit the result when the sentence explicitly introduces one with 就.
自从了去年，我一直住在北京。
(Ever-since-le last year, I have lived in Beijing.)
Repair the pattern
了 is attached to the preposition: 自从 introduces a starting point and cannot take the aspect particle 了. The result marker is left without a result: 就 must introduce a complete result following the 自从 clause.
自从去年，我一直住在北京。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
