Abstract Frames 在…上, 在…下, and 在…中 in Chinese
在……上 / 下 / 中
The paired frames 在…上, 在…下, and 在…中 extend spatial localizers into abstract meanings. 上 commonly marks an aspect or domain, 下 a condition or influence, and 中 an environment, range, or process. The whole frame normally functions as an adverbial before the predicate or at clause beginning.

Read the structure
The paired frames 在…上, 在…下, and 在…中 extend spatial localizers into abstract meanings. 上 commonly marks an aspect or domain, 下 a condition or influence, and 中 an environment, range, or process. The whole frame normally functions as an adverbial before the predicate or at clause beginning. Keep the model 在 + Domain / Condition / Process + 上 / 下 / 中，Clause visible while you compare each sentence.

On this matter, it is best to listen more to your parents.
Choose the right context
Use 在…上 to identify an aspect or issue. Use 在…下 to present a condition or influence. Use 在…中 to locate something within a range, environment, or process.
在他的影响下，我喜欢上了中文。
Under his influence, I came to like Chinese.
Respect the boundary
Do not omit the closing localizer in an abstract frame. Do not omit the opening 在 when the full frame is required. Do not place the completed frame after the predicate it modifies in neutral order.
在这件事情，最好多听听父母的意见。
(At this matter, listen more to your parents.)
Repair the pattern
The closing localizer is omitted: The abstract aspect frame requires both 在 and the closing localizer 上. The opening preposition is omitted: The condition frame requires the opening 在 together with the closing 下.
