Basic Adverbial Order Before the Predicate in Chinese

副词、形容词、时间和处所词语作状语 zhuàngyǔ yǔxù

Chinese adverbials normally appear before the predicate they modify. Time expressions commonly precede place expressions, and a place phrase usually precedes the action. Adverbs and manner descriptions also stand before the verb. Not every sentence contains every slot, but moving these elements after the object usually breaks the neutral basic order.

MODEL

Subject + Time + Place + Adverb / Manner + Verb Phrase

Read the structure

Chinese adverbials normally appear before the predicate they modify. Time expressions commonly precede place expressions, and a place phrase usually precedes the action. Adverbs and manner descriptions also stand before the verb. Not every sentence contains every slot, but moving these elements after the object usually breaks the neutral basic order. Keep the model Subject + Time + Place + Adverb / Manner + Verb Phrase visible while you compare each sentence.

我每天在学校认真学习。

I study diligently at school every day.

Choose the right context

Put time before place when both set the action. Place adverbs and manner expressions before their predicate. Keep the object after the action verb in an ordinary clause.

他晚上在家安静地看书。

He reads quietly at home in the evening.

Respect the boundary

Do not place a time expression between the verb and its object. Do not strand a place phrase after the object in the neutral pattern. Do not insert aspect between an adverb and its predicate.

我去每天学校。

(I go to school every day.)

Repair the pattern

The time expression splits the verb and object: 每天 sets the time of the action and belongs before 去学校. Aspect splits the manner adverbial from its verb: The manner adverbial directly precedes 写; 了 follows the verb.

我每天去学校。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 副词、形容词、时间和处所词语作状语 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 副词、形容词、时间和处所词语作状语.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 副词、形容词、时间和处所词语作状语. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Basic Adverbial Order Before the Predicate Questions

Must time always come before place?

That is the neutral default when both modify the same action. Topic structure or contrastive focus can motivate other arrangements.

Does every adjective need 地 before a verb?

No. Some established manner uses omit 地. This lesson teaches the basic pre-predicate position, not a claim that 地 is always required.
