Formal Coordination with 同 and 与 in Chinese

同/与 tóng / yǔ

同 and 与 can coordinate parallel nouns or noun phrases with a meaning similar to and, especially in formal or written language. The coordinated members must occupy the same syntactic slot. These connectors cannot take aspect, separate a numeral from its classifier, or join a complete cause clause directly to an unrelated result clause.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

A + 同/与 + B; A + 同/与 + B + Predicate

Read the structure

同 and 与 can coordinate parallel nouns or noun phrases with a meaning similar to and, especially in formal or written language. The coordinated members must occupy the same syntactic slot. These connectors cannot take aspect, separate a numeral from its classifier, or join a complete cause clause directly to an unrelated result clause. Keep the model A + 同/与 + B; A + 同/与 + B + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

老师与学生都参加了会议。

Both teachers and students attended the meeting.

Choose the right context

Use 与 to coordinate parallel nouns in formal writing. Use 同 between two participant noun phrases. Use either form inside a subject or object noun phrase with matched members.

我同他是新同事。

He and I are new colleagues.

Respect the boundary

Do not attach aspect marking to the connector. Do not use 同 or 与 inside a number-classifier phrase. Do not coordinate unlike syntactic categories as one noun phrase.

老师与了学生都参加会议。

(Teachers and students attended the meeting.)

Repair the pattern

Aspect marker attaches to the coordinator: 与 is a coordinator and cannot take perfective 了; 了 follows the event verb. Coordinator splits numeral and classifier: 两本书 is one quantity phrase; a coordinator cannot occupy the classifier slot.

老师与学生都参加了会议。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
