Formal Additive Adverb 亦 in Chinese

亦 is a formal additive adverb equivalent to also or likewise. It stands after the subject or topic and before the predicate it adds to a parallel statement. It does not coordinate two noun phrases by itself, cannot follow the object it scopes over, and cannot take an aspect marker as its own suffix.

Read the structure

亦 is a formal additive adverb equivalent to also or likewise. It stands after the subject or topic and before the predicate it adds to a parallel statement. It does not coordinate two noun phrases by itself, cannot follow the object it scopes over, and cannot take an aspect marker as its own suffix. Keep the model Subject + 亦 + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

本方案亦适用于小型企业。

This plan also applies to small businesses.

Choose the right context

Use 亦 before a predicate in formal prose. Use it to add a parallel fact about a new subject. Use it where the preceding discourse supplies an additive comparison.

他精通法语,亦会说西班牙语。

He is fluent in French and also speaks Spanish.

Respect the boundary

Do not use 亦 alone between two coordinated nouns. Do not place 亦 after the predicate object. Do not attach aspect 了 to 亦.

本方案亦了适用于小型企业。

Repair the pattern

Aspect marker separates additive adverb and predicate: 亦 is an adverb before the predicate; it cannot bear perfective 了. Additive adverb is stranded after the object: Additive 亦 must precede the full predicate 值得关注.

Their additive function overlaps, but 亦 is strongly associated with formal written style.

Can 亦 join nouns like 和?
