Causal Sentence Groups in Chinese

因果复句 yīnguǒ fùjù

A causal sentence group links a reason to its consequence. The relation may be understood from two complete clauses without an overt connector, or it may be marked explicitly with 因为 in the cause and 所以 in the result. The pattern explains why a result holds; it does not require both markers whenever context already makes that relation clear.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Cause Clause,(因为……所以……) + Result Clause

Read the structure

A causal sentence group links a reason to its consequence. The relation may be understood from two complete clauses without an overt connector, or it may be marked explicitly with 因为 in the cause and 所以 in the result. The pattern explains why a result holds; it does not require both markers whenever context already makes that relation clear. Keep the model Cause Clause,(因为……所以……) + Result Clause visible while you compare each sentence.

我今天太忙了,午饭都没吃。

I was so busy today that I did not even eat lunch.

Choose the right context

Explain why an event or state has a particular result. Use 因为 before an explicit cause and 所以 before its result. Leave the relation unmarked only when both clauses and their causal link remain clear.

那个学生病了,没来上课。

That student was ill, so he did not come to class.

Respect the boundary

Do not leave either side of an explicit 因为所以 pair without a clause. Do not treat two merely consecutive events as automatically causal. Do not place 因为 and 所以 together before the same clause.

因为,所以我今天不做饭。

(Because, so I will not cook today.)

Repair the pattern

The cause clause is missing: 因为 must introduce a cause rather than stand alone before the result. The result connector has no result: 所以 must introduce a complete result clause in this standalone sentence.

因为很累,所以我今天不做饭。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

我今天太忙了,午饭都没吃。

Wǒ jīntiān tài máng le, wǔfàn dōu méi chī.

I was so busy today that I did not even eat lunch.

那个学生病了,没来上课。

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Explain why an event or state has a particular result.
  • Use 因为 before an explicit cause and 所以 before its result.
  • Leave the relation unmarked only when both clauses and their causal link remain clear.

Do not use it when

  • Do not leave either side of an explicit 因为所以 pair without a clause.
  • Do not treat two merely consecutive events as automatically causal.
  • Do not place 因为 and 所以 together before the same clause.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

因为,所以我今天不做饭。

因为很累,所以我今天不做饭。

The cause clause is missing

因为 must introduce a cause rather than stand alone before the result.

因为他病了,所以。

因为他病了,所以他没来上课。

The result connector has no result

所以 must introduce a complete result clause in this standalone sentence.

因为,所以我今天不做饭。

Yīnwèi, suǒyǐ wǒ jīntiān bù zuòfàn.

因为 must introduce a cause rather than stand alone before the result.

因为他病了,所以。

Yīnwèi tā bìng le, suǒyǐ.

所以 must introduce a complete result clause in this standalone sentence.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 因果复句 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 因为他病了,所以。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 因果复句.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 因果复句. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Causal Sentence Groups Questions

Must 因为 and 所以 always appear together?

No. Mandarin can use either marker alone, or no marker when the causal relation is unmistakable. Keeping both is useful when the relation needs to be explicit.

How is this different from simple sequence?

A causal group says that one situation explains the other. A sequence only places events in an order and does not by itself claim that the first caused the second.
