Choose the right context
Use 多久 when the expected answer is a duration. Use 为什么 when the expected answer explains a cause or reason. Use 怎么样 or 怎样 to ask about condition, quality, method, or an evaluation.

Do not use 为什么 when asking how long something lasts. Do not add 吗 to a complete content question headed by one of these expressions. Do not assume 怎么样 always asks method; it often asks how something is or seeks an evaluation.

Repair the pattern
为什么 replaces a duration question: The expected answer is a length of time, so use 多久 rather than the reason word 为什么. 吗 is added to a complete content question: 怎么样 already makes the sentence a content question. Final 吗 would incorrectly add a yes-no question layer.

Are 怎么样 and 怎样 interchangeable?
They overlap in many questions about manner or condition. 怎么样 is especially common for asking how something is or requesting an evaluation; 怎样 can sound more concise or written.
Does 多久 always need 了?
No. 了 is common when asking about a duration continuing to the present, but future duration questions such as 要等多久 do not require it.
