也……也…… Parallel Clauses in Chinese
(也)……,也……
The paired 也 pattern coordinates two parallel facts about the same or different topics. The first clause may place its topic before the predicate, while the second 也 marks the parallel or additional fact. Repeating the subject is optional when the topic remains easy to recover.

MODEL
Topic/Subject + Predicate 1,(Subject) + 也 + Predicate 2
Read the structure
The paired 也 pattern coordinates two parallel facts about the same or different topics. The first clause may place its topic before the predicate, while the second 也 marks the parallel or additional fact. Repeating the subject is optional when the topic remains easy to recover. Keep the model Topic/Subject + Predicate 1,(Subject) + 也 + Predicate 2 visible while you compare each sentence.
篮球他喜欢,排球他也喜欢。
He likes basketball, and he also likes volleyball.
Choose the right context
Add a second parallel preference, ability, or property. Keep 也 before the second predicate or focused element. Repeat the subject when the topic could otherwise be unclear.
面条儿我也爱吃,米饭我也爱吃。
I like noodles, and I also like rice.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 也 after the predicate it scopes over. Do not use the frame for an accidental sequence of unrelated facts. Do not assume 也 always means simple addition without a parallel first clause.
他会跳舞会也唱歌。
(He can dance can also sing.)
Repair the pattern
也 follows the second predicate: 也 belongs before the parallel predicate; it cannot be stranded after the verb phrase. The second clause has no parallel predicate: 也 marks a second clause or predicate; it cannot stand alone as the added fact.
他会唱歌,也会跳舞。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

03 / EXAMPLES
Examples You Can Reuse
Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

- Add a second parallel preference, ability, or property.
- Keep 也 before the second predicate or focused element.
- Repeat the subject when the topic could otherwise be unclear.
Do not use it when
- Do not place 也 after the predicate it scopes over.

Compare Right and Wrong
Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

06 / PRACTICE
Practice the Grammar Point
Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.
1. Judge the sentence
2. Choose the correction
3. Build the sentence
Build a complete sentence with (也)……,也…….
07 / APPLY
Apply It in Your Sentence
Write one original sentence with (也)……,也……. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.
08 / QUESTIONS
也……也…… Parallel Clauses Questions
Must 也 appear in both clauses?
No. The first clause can be unmarked, while the second 也 signals the parallel addition. Repeating 也 is possible when several clauses are coordinated.
Can the topics come before the clauses?
Yes. Basketball他喜欢,排球他也喜欢 uses topicalized objects, but the second 也 still precedes the predicate it scopes over.
