沿着: Along a Path in Chinese

沿(着) yán(zhe)

沿 or 沿着 introduces the path followed by movement, such as a road, river, or lakeside. The whole path phrase normally precedes the motion verb. 着 is optional in many uses, but 了 cannot replace it, and the path noun must directly follow 沿 or 沿着. Unlike 朝, it identifies a route traversed rather than only the direction faced.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 沿 / 沿着 + Path + Motion verb

Read the structure

沿 or 沿着 introduces the path followed by movement, such as a road, river, or lakeside. The whole path phrase normally precedes the motion verb. 着 is optional in many uses, but 了 cannot replace it, and the path noun must directly follow 沿 or 沿着. Unlike 朝, it identifies a route traversed rather than only the direction faced. Keep the model Subject + 沿 / 沿着 + Path + Motion verb visible while you compare each sentence.

他喜欢沿着湖边散步。

He likes walking along the lakeside.

Choose the right context

Describe movement along a road, river, or boundary. Give route instructions. Use either 沿 or 沿着 when both fit the register.

你沿这条路一直走。

Keep walking along this road.

Respect the boundary

Do not use it merely for a destination. Do not attach 了 to 沿 or 沿着. Do not place the path phrase after the motion verb.

我们沿了这条路走。

(We along-le this road walk.)

Repair the pattern

了 is attached to the path preposition: 沿着 is the path marker; the aspect particle 了 cannot replace 着. The path phrase follows the motion verb: The 沿着 path phrase must precede the motion verb 走.

我们沿着这条路走。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS

沿着: Along a Path Questions

Is 着 required after 沿?

No. Both 沿路走 and 沿着这条路走 can be grammatical.

How is 沿着 different from 到?

沿着 marks the path followed; 到 marks the endpoint reached. It describes the complete route traversed, not merely the direction faced or final destination. This distinction guides route instructions.
