朝: Toward a Direction in Chinese
朝
朝 introduces the direction toward which an action is oriented, including a place, side, or person. The entire 朝 phrase appears before the action it modifies. It is not the completed action itself, so aspect markers attach to the verb, and the preposition cannot be moved after that verb. Its following verb identifies movement, posture, or directed attention.

Read the structure
朝 introduces the direction toward which an action is oriented, including a place, side, or person. The entire 朝 phrase appears before the action it modifies. It is not the completed action itself, so aspect markers attach to the verb, and the preposition cannot be moved after that verb. Its following verb identifies movement, posture, or directed attention. Keep the model Subject + 朝 + Direction / Person + Verb visible while you compare each sentence.
大门朝南开。
The main door faces south.
Choose the right context
Describe physical orientation: 大门朝南开。 Describe movement or looking toward a direction. Mark the person toward whom someone calls or gestures.
他朝左边看了一下儿。
He glanced to the left.
Respect the boundary
Do not attach 了 to 朝. Do not put the 朝 phrase after the motion verb. Do not use it to mark a destination reached; use 到 for arrival.
他朝了左边看。
(He toward-le the left looked.)
Repair the pattern
了 is attached to the preposition: 朝 only introduces direction; completion belongs to the action 看. The directional phrase follows the verb: The 朝 phrase must precede the verb it modifies.
他朝左边看了一下儿。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
朝: Toward a Direction Questions
How is 朝 different from 到?
朝 marks orientation toward something; 到 marks reaching a destination or endpoint. A 朝 phrase does not by itself say that the endpoint was reached.
Can a person follow 朝?
Yes. 朝我笑 or 朝老师点头 directs the action toward that person.
