MODEL

Subject + Verb + 下去

Read the structure

After an activity verb, 下去 can mean that the activity continues forward in time rather than moving physically downward or away. It commonly follows encouragement, advice, or a condition about maintaining an ongoing action. The verb and 下去 form one unit, while objects and modal expressions occupy their normal positions. Keep the model Subject + Verb + 下去 visible while you compare each sentence.

别紧张,请继续说下去。

Do not be nervous; please keep speaking.

Choose the right context

Encourage an ongoing action: 别停,继续说下去。 Describe persistence into the future: 只要坚持下去就会进步。 Warn about consequences of continued behavior: 再这样拖下去会出问题。

只要坚持下去,你一定会进步。

As long as you keep at it, you will improve.

Respect the boundary

Do not force a temporal reading when the context describes literal downward or away movement. Do not place 下去 before the activity verb it complements. Do not insert an object between a tightly bound verb and its continuation complement unless that verb permits it.

请说去下,不要停。

(Please speak go-down, do not stop.)

Repair the pattern

The continuation complement is reversed: The continuation complement has the fixed order 下去 after 说. The continuation complement is split around the object: 下去 remains intact after 坚持; use 把 to place the affected object before the verb-complement unit.

请说下去,不要停。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1

3. Build the sentence

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

08 / QUESTIONS

下去 as Continued Action Questions

Does 下去 here describe physical direction?

No. With an ongoing activity, it can extend that activity forward in time. Context distinguishes this from literal direction.

Can 下去 follow any verb?

No. The verb must describe an activity or state that can reasonably continue, and the resulting combination must be idiomatic.
