顺便: Doing a Secondary Action in Chinese
顺便
顺便 marks a secondary action completed conveniently while carrying out a main trip or task. It precedes the additional action, often after the subject. The context must contain a primary occasion that makes the extra action convenient; 顺便 cannot describe the main purpose itself or carry an aspect particle like a verb.

Read the structure
顺便 marks a secondary action completed conveniently while carrying out a main trip or task. It precedes the additional action, often after the subject. The context must contain a primary occasion that makes the extra action convenient; 顺便 cannot describe the main purpose itself or carry an aspect particle like a verb. Keep the model Main occasion, Subject + 顺便 + Secondary action visible while you compare each sentence.
去办公室时,他顺便交了我的作业。
When going to the office, he handed in my homework as well.
Choose the right context
Add a small task to an existing trip. Mention a convenient secondary action after the main occasion. Use 顺便把…也… to include another person's item.
我去上海开会,顺便看望老师。
I am going to Shanghai for a meeting and will visit my teacher while there.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 顺便 when the action is the main purpose. Do not place 顺便 after the secondary action. Do not attach 了 directly to 顺便.
他交了我的作业顺便。
(He submitted my homework incidentally.)
Repair the pattern
顺便 follows the secondary action: 顺便 is an adverb and must introduce the secondary action. Aspect is attached to the adverb: 顺便 is not the completed action; perfective 了 belongs after the action verb 交.
他顺便交了我的作业。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
