Read the structure
A serial-verb clause places two verb phrases under one subject without a conjunction. The first may describe movement, means, or manner, while the second gives the goal or purpose. The order follows the event logic: the enabling movement or method comes before the action it is intended to accomplish. Keep the model Subject + Verb Phrase 1 + Verb Phrase 2 visible while you compare each sentence.
我去图书馆看书。
I go to the library to read.
Choose the right context
Put a movement verb before the activity performed at the destination. Place the means or manner action before the goal it enables. Use one shared subject when the same participant performs both linked actions.
他骑自行车去上班。
He rides a bicycle to work.
Respect the boundary
Do not reverse purpose and enabling action when the intended event order is fixed. Do not insert 和 between the two verb phrases as if they were noun phrases. Do not use the bare serial pattern when the two actions have different unexpressed subjects.
我去看书图书馆。
(I go to the library to read.)
Repair the pattern
Destination placed after the purpose action: The destination 图书馆 completes the movement phrase 去图书馆 before the purpose action 看书 begins. Noun coordinator inserted between verb phrases: The first verb phrase describes the manner of reaching the second goal; noun coordinator 和 cannot link them in this serial relation.
我去图书馆看书。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
