Read the structure
Some serial-verb sentences place two verbal expressions under one subject without an overt connective, while their meanings imply cause and result, contrast, or condition and action. 生病住院 links cause to consequence, 借了没看 contrasts obtaining with not reading, and 有办法解决 makes possession of a means license the solution. Keep the model Shared Subject + Verb Phrase 1 + Verb Phrase 2 visible while you compare each sentence.
李老师生病住院了。
Teacher Li became ill and was hospitalized.
Choose the right context
Link an event directly to its consequence under one subject. Contrast a completed first action with a negated second action. Present possession or availability as the condition for a following action.
这本书她借了没看。
She borrowed this book but did not read it.
Respect the boundary
Do not insert aspect markers inside either verb. Do not reverse verbs when that changes the intended logical relation. Do not confuse a shared-subject serial sentence with a pivotal sentence.
李老师了生病住院。
(Teacher Li le became ill hospitalized.)
Repair the pattern
Aspect splits the first verb: 了 cannot precede and split the first predicate; it follows the completed serial event here. Negation and aspect are scrambled: 了 closes the first action 借了, while 没 directly negates the second action 看.
李老师生病住院了。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
Serial Verbs with Causal, Contrastive, or Conditional Relations Questions
Are these just two independent sentences without punctuation?
No. The verbal expressions share one subject and form one serial predicate whose internal relation is inferred from meaning.
How is this different from serial verbs of purpose?
Purpose serial verbs make the second action the goal of the first; this lesson covers causal, contrastive, and conditional relations instead.
