Pivotal Sentences for Evaluation and Naming in Chinese

兼语句表评价与称谓 jiānyǔjù biǎo píngjià yǔ chēngwèi

In this pivotal pattern, the noun after an evaluation or naming verb is both the first verb's object and the following predicate's subject. Verbs such as 称, 叫, 选, and 认为 can assign a name, role, or judgment. The pivot must remain between the two predicate parts because it participates grammatically in both.

MODEL

Subject + Evaluation or Naming Verb + Pivot + Predicate or Role

Read the structure

In this pivotal pattern, the noun after an evaluation or naming verb is both the first verb's object and the following predicate's subject. Verbs such as 称, 叫, 选, and 认为 can assign a name, role, or judgment. The pivot must remain between the two predicate parts because it participates grammatically in both. Keep the model Subject + Evaluation or Naming Verb + Pivot + Predicate or Role visible while you compare each sentence.

大家都称他为李先生。

Everyone calls him Mr. Li.

Choose the right context

State what someone calls another person or thing. Assign or elect someone to a role. Present an evaluation whose target also heads the following predicate.

同学们选她当班长。

The students elected her class monitor.

Respect the boundary

Do not move the pivot after the role or evaluation. Do not separate the first verb from its pivot with the second predicate. Do not confuse this shared pivot with two independent objects.

大家都称为李先生他。

(Everyone calls as Mr. Li him.)

Repair the pattern

The pivot follows the assigned role: The pivot 他 must immediately follow 称 before the assigned name introduced by 为. The second predicate precedes its pivot: The pivot 她 is the object of 选 and the subject of 当班长, so it stands between them.

大家都称他为李先生。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
