Five Modal and Evaluative Adverbs in Chinese
的确 / 反而 / 还真 / 竟然 / 究竟
These adverbs express a speaker's stance toward a proposition. 的确 confirms it, 反而 marks a result contrary to an expectation or comparison, 还真 gives conversational confirmation, 竟然 marks surprise, and 究竟 presses for the real answer in a question. Their meanings differ, but each normally appears before the predicate it evaluates.

MODEL
Subject + Modal Adverb + Predicate
Read the structure
These adverbs express a speaker's stance toward a proposition. 的确 confirms it, 反而 marks a result contrary to an expectation or comparison, 还真 gives conversational confirmation, 竟然 marks surprise, and 究竟 presses for the real answer in a question. Their meanings differ, but each normally appears before the predicate it evaluates. Keep the model Subject + Modal Adverb + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
这个办法的确有效。
This method is indeed effective.
Choose the right context
Use 的确 or 还真 to confirm a proposition with different register. Use 反而 or 竟然 for an expectation mismatch with different discourse roles. Use 究竟 in a genuine content or alternative question seeking resolution.
雨没有停,反而更大了。
The rain did not stop; instead, it became heavier.
Respect the boundary
Do not place aspect before the modal adverb. Do not stack an A-not-A form with final 吗. Do not treat 反而 as a simple synonym of 但是.
他了的确来过这里。
(He has indeed been here.)
Repair the pattern
Aspect precedes the stance adverb: 的确 belongs before the predicate 来过这里; 了 cannot stand before it here. Two yes-no question formats are combined: The A-not-A form 来不来 already forms the question and cannot also take final 吗.
他的确来过这里。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

Read the Sentence
Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

06 / PRACTICE
Practice the Grammar Point
Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.
1. Judge the sentence
2. Choose the correction
3. Build the sentence
Build a complete sentence with 的确 / 反而 / 还真 / 竟然 / 究竟.
07 / APPLY
Apply It in Your Sentence
Write one original sentence with 的确 / 反而 / 还真 / 竟然 / 究竟. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.
08 / QUESTIONS
Five Modal and Evaluative Adverbs Questions
How are 反而 and 但是 different?
但是 links a contrast between clauses. 反而 focuses the second result as contrary to an expectation or to the direction suggested by the first clause.
Is 还真 formal?
No. 还真 is strongly conversational. 的确 is a more neutral confirmation suitable for formal prose as well.
