MODEL

Background expectation, Subject + 偏偏 + Predicate

Read the structure

偏偏 is a speaker-oriented adverb that presents a proposition as conflicting with an explicit or recoverable background expectation. It commonly appears before negation, modal expressions, degree phrases, or other material inside the predicate. The outcome need not be negative: a welcome result can also be unexpectedly at odds with what people expected. Keep the model Background expectation, Subject + 偏偏 + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

大家都准备好了,老王偏偏还没来。

Everyone was ready, but contrary to expectation Lao Wang still had not arrived.

Choose the right context

When an event conflicts with an explicit expectation: 大家都以为会下雨,天气偏偏晴了。 When the background expectation can be recovered from the situation: 我最忙的时候,电脑偏偏坏了。 When even a welcome result is surprising against the background: 那么多人都没抽中,他偏偏第一次就中奖了。

我最忙的时候,电脑偏偏坏了。

The computer happened to break exactly when I was busiest.

Respect the boundary

Do not place ordinary negation before 偏偏 when 偏偏 evaluates the negated proposition; place 偏偏 before 不 or 没 instead. Do not place a degree marker such as 最 before 偏偏 when 偏偏 evaluates the degree phrase inside its scope. Do not treat a contextless but grammatical clause as automatically wrong merely because its background expectation is unstated; the background may be recoverable from discourse.

他的父母不偏偏同意这个办法。

(His parents not contrary-to-expectation agree with this method.)

Repair the pattern

Negation is incorrectly placed before 偏偏: 偏偏 normally scopes over the negated proposition, so it precedes 不. Placing 不 before 偏偏 changes the structure and does not express the intended unexpected disagreement. A degree marker is incorrectly placed before 偏偏: 偏偏 occupies a higher position than the degree phrase it evaluates. Put 偏偏 before 最难解决, not between 最 and the adjective.

他的父母偏偏不同意这个办法。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • When an event conflicts with an explicit expectation: 大家都以为会下雨,天气偏偏晴了。
  • When the background expectation can be recovered from the situation: 我最忙的时候,电脑偏偏坏了。
  • When even a welcome result is surprising against the background: 那么多人都没抽中,他偏偏第一次就中奖了。

Do not use it when

  • Do not place ordinary negation before 偏偏 when 偏偏 evaluates the negated proposition; place 偏偏 before 不 or 没 instead.
  • Do not place a degree marker such as 最 before 偏偏 when 偏偏 evaluates the degree phrase inside its scope.
  • Do not treat a contextless but grammatical clause as automatically wrong merely because its background expectation is unstated; the background may be recoverable from discourse.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

他的父母不偏偏同意这个办法。

A degree marker is incorrectly placed before 偏偏

偏偏 occupies a higher position than the degree phrase it evaluates. Put 偏偏 before 最难解决, not between 最 and the adjective.

08 / QUESTIONS

偏偏: Contrary to Expectation Questions

Does 偏偏 always express dissatisfaction?

No. It marks a mismatch between the proposition and a background expectation. The unexpected outcome may be inconvenient, neutral, or welcome.

Must the expected outcome be stated before 偏偏?

No. The expectation may be stated explicitly or recovered from the situation and preceding discourse. Without any recoverable contrast, however, 偏偏 lacks its usual pragmatic motivation.

Where does 偏偏 go relative to 不 or 没?

When 偏偏 evaluates an unexpectedly negated proposition, it normally comes first: 偏偏不同意 or 偏偏没来. The same high position commonly applies before modal and degree expressions.
