Read the structure
好在 introduces a favorable fact that prevents a difficult situation from becoming worse. It normally begins the clause containing the saving factor, after a problem has been stated or understood. 好在你也在北京,我们可以互相照顾。
Fortunately, you are also in Beijing, so we can look after each other.
Choose the right context
Introduce the fact that limits damage after a problem. Explain why a difficult situation remains manageable. Highlight an available person, resource, or mild condition as the saving factor.
路上出了点问题,好在没有人受伤。
There was a problem on the road, but fortunately nobody was hurt.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 好在 after the favorable fact. Do not split 好 and 在 around a noun phrase. Do not use it for a merely desirable wish that is not an actual fact.
没有人受伤好在。
(Nobody was hurt fortunately.)
Repair the pattern
好在 follows the saving fact: 好在 introduces the complete favorable proposition and must appear before it. The fixed expression is split: 好在 is one fixed discourse expression; its two syllables cannot be separated.
好在没有人受伤。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
