MODEL
Subject + 白白 + Verb + Loss / Effort
Read the structure
白白 marks an action, cost, or loss as producing no worthwhile return or occurring for no good reason. It stands before the verb and carries the speaker's negative evaluation of wasted effort, time, money, or opportunity. It is not the adjective 白 meaning white and cannot carry aspect marking in this use. Keep the model Subject + 白白 + Verb + Loss / Effort visible while you compare each sentence.
这次投资失败,让公司白白损失了很多钱。
The failed investment caused the company to lose a great deal of money for nothing.
Choose the right context
Describe effort that achieves no useful result. Evaluate money, time, or an opportunity as needlessly lost. Warn that an action will be wasted under current conditions.
没有准备就去,只会白白浪费机会。
Going without preparation will only waste the opportunity.
Respect the boundary
Do not attach an aspect particle to 白白. Do not place 白白 after the loss or action. Do not use this adverb for the literal colour white.
公司白白了损失很多钱。
(The company vainly-LE lose much money.)
Repair the pattern
An aspect particle is attached to the evaluative adverb: 白白 is an adverb and cannot take aspect 了; aspect marking belongs with the following predicate or clause. 白白 follows the action it evaluates: 白白 modifies the following verb phrase and cannot trail the completed object.
公司白白损失了很多钱。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
