非...不可: Absolutely Must in Chinese

The 非...不可 construction frames an action or choice as non-negotiable: someone is determined to do it, circumstances make it necessary, or an outcome seems unavoidable. Put the action between 非(要) and 不可. The pattern is stronger than 必须 and often carries insistence, pressure, or a negative prediction rather than neutral obligation.

STRUCTURE

Subject + 非(要) + Action + 不可

When to use 非…不可 — and when not

Use it when

  • For a firm necessity imposed by the situation: 这项任务今天非完成不可。
  • For determined or stubborn insistence, often with 要: 父母不同意,可他非要去不可。
  • For an outcome presented as unavoidable, often undesirable: 再不修理,这台机器非坏不可。

Don't use it when

  • For a mild recommendation or ordinary duty — 应该, 得, or 必须 is usually less forceful.
  • With the frame reversed; 非 opens and 不可 closes it: 非去不可, not 不可去非.
  • When you do not mean necessity, insistence, or an unavoidable result; the pattern adds strong speaker commitment.

Right vs. wrong

我不可去非。

我非去不可。

不可 placed before the verb phrase

非 and 不可 form a frame around the required action. Put 去 between them: 非 + 去 + 不可.

他非要不可买那本书。

他非要买那本书不可。

The action placed after the complete frame

With 非要, the entire action 买那本书 still comes before the closing 不可. 非要不可 cannot stand together before the action.

非...不可: Absolutely Must FAQ

What does 非...不可 mean?

It presents an action or choice as non-negotiable: someone insists on it, circumstances require it, or the result seems unavoidable. It is normally stronger and more emotionally marked than 必须.

What is the difference between 非...不可 and 非要...不可?

Both are emphatic. Adding 要 commonly foregrounds a person's determination or stubborn insistence, while 非...不可 can also describe objective necessity or an inevitable outcome.

Can 非...不可 predict an outcome?

Yes. In sentences such as 再不修理,这台机器非坏不可, it predicts an outcome as unavoidable. This use often carries a negative evaluation, but that is a tendency rather than a universal rule.
