Question Words Stay in Place in Chinese

什么 / 谁 / 哪儿 / 怎么 shénme / shéi / nǎr / zěnme

Chinese content questions keep the question word where the answer would appear. 什么 follows a verb when it asks for that verb's object, as in 你买什么. 怎么 normally comes before the verb phrase when it asks how an action is done. Do not move question words to English-style sentence-initial position.

MODEL

Question Word in the Answer Slot

Read the structure

Chinese content questions keep the question word where the answer would appear. 什么 follows a verb when it asks for that verb's object, as in 你买什么. 怎么 normally comes before the verb phrase when it asks how an action is done. Do not move question words to English-style sentence-initial position. Keep the model Question Word in the Answer Slot visible while you compare each sentence.

你买什么?

What are you buying?

Choose the right context

Put 什么 after a verb when asking for its object: 你买什么? Put 谁 in the subject position when asking who acts: 谁要喝茶? Put 怎么 before the action whose method you are asking: 你怎么去医院?

谁要喝茶?

Who wants tea?

Respect the boundary

Do not front an object question word merely because English begins with 'what.' Do not place 怎么 between a motion verb and its destination. Do not add English do-support or change the normal Chinese predicate order.

你买本哪书?

(What book are you buying?)

Repair the pattern

The classifier is placed before the interrogative determiner: 哪 begins the interrogative noun phrase and must precede its classifier: 哪本书. The classifier cannot be moved before 哪. 怎么 placed inside the motion verb phrase: 怎么 asks how the whole action 去医院 is performed, so it must precede that verb phrase and cannot split 去 from 医院.

你买什么书?

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

03 / EXAMPLES

Examples You Can Reuse

Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.

你买什么?

Nǐ mǎi shénme?

What are you buying?

谁要喝茶?

Shéi yào hē chá?

Who wants tea?

你怎么去医院?

Nǐ zěnme qù yīyuàn?

How do you go to the hospital?

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Put 什么 after a verb when asking for its object: 你买什么?
  • Put 谁 in the subject position when asking who acts: 谁要喝茶?
  • Put 怎么 before the action whose method you are asking: 你怎么去医院?

Do not use it when

  • Do not front an object question word merely because English begins with 'what.'
  • Do not place 怎么 between a motion verb and its destination.
  • Do not add English do-support or change the normal Chinese predicate order.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

你买本哪书?

你买什么书?

The classifier is placed before the interrogative determiner

哪 begins the interrogative noun phrase and must precede its classifier: 哪本书. The classifier cannot be moved before 哪.

你去怎么医院?

你怎么去医院?

怎么 placed inside the motion verb phrase

怎么 asks how the whole action 去医院 is performed, so it must precede that verb phrase and cannot split 去 from 医院.

你买本哪书?

Nǐ mǎi běn nǎ shū?

哪 begins the interrogative noun phrase and must precede its classifier: 哪本书. The classifier cannot be moved before 哪.

你去怎么医院?

Nǐ qù zěnme yīyuàn?

怎么 asks how the whole action 去医院 is performed, so it must precede that verb phrase and cannot split 去 from 医院.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 什么 / 谁 / 哪儿 / 怎么 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 你去怎么医院?

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 什么 / 谁 / 哪儿 / 怎么.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 什么 / 谁 / 哪儿 / 怎么. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Question Words Stay in Place Questions

Why does 什么 come after 买?

Because it replaces the unknown object. The answer 一本书 and the question word 什么 occupy the same slot: 你买一本书 / 你买什么.

Where does 怎么 go?

Before the action whose method is unknown: 你怎么去医院 and 这个字怎么读. It does not move to the front automatically.
