Limiting Sentence Ending 而已 in Chinese
而已
Sentence-final 而已 limits the preceding proposition to nothing more than the stated fact, often translated merely or that is all. It follows the complete phrase or clause within its scope. The two-character ending is fixed: particles, nouns, and aspect material cannot split it, and it cannot precede the proposition it limits.

Read the structure
Sentence-final 而已 limits the preceding proposition to nothing more than the stated fact, often translated merely or that is all. It follows the complete phrase or clause within its scope. The two-character ending is fixed: particles, nouns, and aspect material cannot split it, and it cannot precede the proposition it limits. Keep the model Clause + 而已 visible while you compare each sentence.
我只是提一个建议而已。
I am merely making a suggestion.
Choose the right context
Use 而已 after the complete proposition it limits; a following final particle may still express the speaker's attitude. Use it to correct an exaggerated interpretation. Use it in neutral or formal limiting statements.
他不过是完成本职工作而已。
He merely completed his assigned work.
Respect the boundary
Do not split 而已 with a particle. Do not insert a noun between 而 and 已. Do not place 而已 before the proposition it limits.
我只是提一个建议而了已。
(I am merely making a suggestion.)
Repair the pattern
Aspect marker splits fixed sentence ending: 而已 is one fixed limiting ending and cannot contain 了. Noun is inserted inside fixed ending: No constituent may intervene between 而 and 已 in the fixed ending.
我只是提一个建议而已。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
