无非...而已... (wúfēi...éryǐ) in Chinese

无非, 不过, 只不过, or 只是 can frame an explanation as limited or less significant than it may appear, often closed by 而已 or 罢了. The construction means nothing more than or merely. Its minimizing tone depends on context and may sound reassuring, dismissive, defensive, or analytical rather than objectively proving insignificance.

STRUCTURE

无非/不过 + Limited Fact + 而已/罢了

When to use 无非/不过…而已/罢了 — and when not

Use it when

  • To reduce a situation to a limited explanation: 他无非是想确认一下而已。
  • To downplay an action: 我不过问了一个问题罢了。
  • To correct exaggerated interpretation: 这只是一次试验而已,不是最终决定。

Don't use it when

  • When the speaker does not intend to limit or downplay the explanation.
  • Do not stack several opening limiters without a grammatical reason.
  • Do not place 而已 or 罢了 inside the phrase being limited; they normally close the limited statement.

无非...而已... (wúfēi...éryǐ) FAQ

Are 而已 and 罢了 required after 无非 or 不过?

No. They reinforce closure and limitation, but 无非 or 不过 can express the minimizing meaning without them when the sentence is complete.

Do 无非 and 不过 always sound dismissive?

No. They can reassure, defend, summarize, or analytically limit an explanation. Whether the tone is dismissive depends on context and speaker stance.
