Duration Complements with Objects in Chinese

时量补语与宾语共现 shíliàng bǔyǔ yǔ bīnyǔ gòngxiàn

A duration complement states how long an action continues. When a transitive verb also has an object, Mandarin may repeat the verb before the duration, or place the duration before a possessive-marked object in licensed combinations. These forms measure the event's span rather than locating when it happened.

MODEL

Verb + Object + Verb + Duration; Verb + Duration + Possessive Object

Read the structure

A duration complement states how long an action continues. When a transitive verb also has an object, Mandarin may repeat the verb before the duration, or place the duration before a possessive-marked object in licensed combinations. These forms measure the event's span rather than locating when it happened. Keep the model Verb + Object + Verb + Duration; Verb + Duration + Possessive Object visible while you compare each sentence.

我学中文学了两年。

I studied Chinese for two years.

Choose the right context

State the continuing length of an action with its object. Repeat the verb after its object before adding the duration. Use the licensed duration-plus-possessive-object order with activities such as swimming.

我等他等了半个多小时。

I waited for him for more than half an hour.

Respect the boundary

Do not split a numeral from its time unit. Do not confuse duration with the time when an event occurs. Do not append an attributive marker after the completed duration predicate.

我学中文学了两。

(I studied Chinese for two.)

Repair the pattern

The time unit is missing: A duration requires a complete quantity such as 两年, not a bare numeral. An extra marker trails the predicate: The duration phrase completes the predicate; a trailing attributive 的 has no following noun to modify.

我学中文学了两年。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • State the continuing length of an action with its object.
  • Repeat the verb after its object before adding the duration.
  • Use the licensed duration-plus-possessive-object order with activities such as swimming.

Do not use it when

  • Do not confuse duration with the time when an event occurs.
  • Do not append an attributive marker after the completed duration predicate.

Compare Right and Wrong

08 / QUESTIONS

Duration Complements with Objects Questions

Why is the verb repeated?

Repeating the transitive verb keeps its object and the following duration in clearly licensed positions. It is a sentence pattern, not brief-action verb reduplication.

Is 四十分钟 a time adverb?

Not here. It measures the span of 游泳 rather than locating the event on a timeline.
