01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

趁 + Favorable time or condition, Subject + Action

Read the structure

趁 introduces a temporary time or condition that makes the following action advantageous: act while the opportunity lasts. Its complement is a noun phrase or clause, and the main action follows the complete 趁 phrase. Unlike 当…的时候, it adds the speaker's intention to exploit a limited opportunity. Keep the model 趁 + Favorable time or condition, Subject + Action visible while you compare each sentence.

趁你还年轻,多尝试一些新事物。

While you are still young, try more new things.

Choose the right context

Urge action before a favorable condition changes. Frame a temporary opportunity with 趁 + clause. Place the main planned action after the complete 趁 phrase.

趁火车还没开,我们去买点儿水。

While the train has not left, let us buy some water.

Respect the boundary

Do not leave 趁 without a time or condition complement. Do not place the main action inside the 趁 phrase. Do not use 趁 for a neutral simultaneous event with no opportunity meaning.

趁,我们去买点儿水。

(While, let us buy some water.)

Repair the pattern

趁 has no opportunity complement: 趁 must introduce the temporary condition that creates the opportunity. The main action interrupts the 趁 clause: Complete 趁火车还没开 before beginning the main action clause.

趁火车还没开,我们去买点儿水。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
