Borrowed Noun and Event Classifiers in Chinese
借用量词
Ordinary nouns such as 碗, 脸, 手, 屋子, and 桌子 can be borrowed to measure a containerful, surfaceful, or locationful quantity. Action nouns such as 刀 and 针 can count bounded performances. The borrowed classifier keeps the normal number-before-classifier order and selects a compatible measured noun or event.

Read the structure
Ordinary nouns such as 碗, 脸, 手, 屋子, and 桌子 can be borrowed to measure a containerful, surfaceful, or locationful quantity. Action nouns such as 刀 and 针 can count bounded performances. The borrowed classifier keeps the normal number-before-classifier order and selects a compatible measured noun or event. Keep the model Number + Borrowed Classifier + Noun; Verb + Number + Event Classifier visible while you compare each sentence.
我喝了一碗汤。
I drank a bowl of soup.
Choose the right context
Use a container noun such as 碗 to measure its contents. Use a surface or location noun to describe something covering or filling it. Use 刀 or 针 after an action verb to count bounded acts.
屋子里挤了一屋子人。
The room was packed with people.
Respect the boundary
Do not reverse the numeral and borrowed classifier. Do not insert aspect marking inside a number-classifier-noun phrase. Do not treat every concrete noun as a productive classifier without an established reading.
我喝了碗一汤。
(I drank a bowl of soup.)
Repair the pattern
Numeral follows the borrowed classifier: The quantity phrase requires numeral 一 before borrowed classifier 碗 and then the measured noun 汤. Aspect marker splits the quantity phrase: 两针药 is one number-classifier-noun phrase; 了 cannot be inserted between classifier 针 and noun 药.
我喝了一碗汤。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
Borrowed Noun and Event Classifiers Questions

It names the container and measures the quantity of its contents.
Are borrowed classifiers unlimited?
