MODEL
Expected setup, 不料 + Unexpected clause
Read the structure
不料 introduces an event that unexpectedly contradicts the preceding plan or expectation. It normally begins the second clause and is followed by a complete unexpected result. The connector is indivisible, cannot take aspect marking, and should not be used when the second event is merely a predictable continuation. Keep the model Expected setup, 不料 + Unexpected clause visible while you compare each sentence.
我本想去踢球,不料外面下起雨来。
I had planned to play football, but unexpectedly it began raining.
Choose the right context
Present an outcome contrary to a plan. Add a sudden unexpected turn in narrative. Contrast an intended action with what actually happened.
我们提前出发,不料路上还是堵车了。
We left early, but unexpectedly still hit traffic.
Respect the boundary
Do not split 不料. Do not attach 了 to the connector. Do not use it for a predictable consequence.
我本想出门,不下雨料。
(I planned to go out, not rain expect.)
Repair the pattern
The fixed connector is split: 不料 is an indivisible connector and must precede the unexpected clause. 了 is attached to the connector: 不料 cannot take 了; completion belongs in the event clause.
我本想出门,不料下雨了。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
