按说
按说 introduces a conclusion that should hold according to normal reasoning, convention, or available facts. It commonly appears at the beginning of a clause and is followed by an actual outcome that contradicts the expectation. Read the structure
按说 introduces a conclusion that should hold according to normal reasoning, convention, or available facts. It commonly appears at the beginning of a clause and is followed by an actual outcome that contradicts the expectation. The expression evaluates likelihood; it does not cite a speaker or serve as the preposition 按 plus an object. Keep the model 按说 + Expected Proposition, 可是 / 但 + Contrary Fact visible while you compare each sentence.
按说现在应该下雪了,可今年还没下。
It should normally have snowed by now, but it has not this year.
Choose the right context
State the outcome normally expected from the circumstances. Set up a contrast between reasonable expectation and actual fact. Frame an inference before 可是, 但, or an equivalent contrary clause.
按说他早该到了,可是电话也打不通。
He should have arrived long ago, but his phone cannot be reached.
Respect the boundary
Do not use 按说 to attribute quoted words to a person. Do not place it after the expected proposition. Do not use it when the second clause simply confirms rather than overturns the expectation.
现在应该下雪了按说,可今年还没下。
(It should snow now according to expectation, but it has not.)
Repair the pattern
按说 is misplaced after the proposition it frames: 按说 introduces the expected proposition and therefore stands before it. 按说 is incorrectly used to identify a quoted source: 按说 is an expectation adverb, not 按 + speaker. Use 按老师的说法 to attribute information.
按说现在应该下雪了,可今年还没下。
