把 plus 一 and a Brief Action in Chinese
把……一……
The sequence 把 + object + 一 + verb presents a short, decisive disposal action that immediately sets up a following event. 一 appears directly before the usually monosyllabic verb and does not count an object. The pattern is narrative and compact, often translated as once someone did X or with one quick action.

MODEL
Subject + 把 + Object + 一 + Verb, + Following Event
Read the structure
The sequence 把 + object + 一 + verb presents a short, decisive disposal action that immediately sets up a following event. 一 appears directly before the usually monosyllabic verb and does not count an object. The pattern is narrative and compact, often translated as once someone did X or with one quick action. Keep the model Subject + 把 + Object + 一 + Verb, + Following Event visible while you compare each sentence.
她把东西一放,转身就走了。
She put the things down and immediately turned and left.
Choose the right context
Link a quick placement to departure: 她把东西一放,转身就走了。 Set up a following event with a brief closure: 老师把门一关,开始上课。 Narrate a sudden decisive action: 他把灯一关,房间立刻黑了。
老师把门一关,开始上课了。
The teacher shut the door and began class.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 一 after the verb in this construction. Do not add a classifier after 一; it is not a numeral-classifier phrase here. Do not use the pattern for a prolonged, internally complex action without a decisive boundary.
老师把门关一,开始上课了。
(The teacher shut-one the door and began class.)
Repair the pattern
一 is incorrectly placed after the brief action verb: In this narrative pattern, 一 directly precedes the brief action verb: 一关, not 关一. A classifier is inserted as if 一 counted the object: 一 marks the bounded action in 一关; it is not a numeral modifying 灯 and therefore takes no classifier.
老师把门一关,开始上课了。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
把 plus 一 and a Brief Action Questions
Does 一 mean one in 把门一关?
It contributes a brief, bounded once-like action, but it does not form a numeral-classifier noun phrase.
Why is there often another clause afterward?
The compact action commonly creates the condition for an immediate next event, which the following clause reports.
